The Iraqi elections have been a resounding success. Nearly 70% of eligible Iraqis braved threats of terrorism and voted on January 30. On January 31, we can all show our solidarity and give terrorism the finger just as nearly 10 million Iraqis did.
SANZIONI E DIPLOMAZIA
L’EUROPA SI ARRENDE A CASTRO
Di Vaclav Havel *
Ex presidente della Repubblica Ceca
http://www.lanuevacuba.com/nuevacuba/notic-05-01-3101.htm

Protest against Marriott Hotels By S.O.S. Iran

Bethesda, MD 20817
January 28, 2005
It has recently come to our attention that the Director of the Interests Section of the
Islamic Republic of Iran in Washington D.C., Mr. Ali Jazini, has reserved a large
section of the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center for a celebration
of the “Twenty Sixth Anniversary of the glorious victory of the Islamic
Revolution in Iran.”
While you may not be aware of the political and economic ramifications of this event,
it is certainly in the best interest of Marriott International, Inc. and in the interest of
the United States of America to deny Mr. Jazini the opportunity to hold this
celebration at your Conference Center or at any other Marriott property. For your
information, February 6th has been formally declared as “Death to America Day” in
the Islamic Republic Calendar.
The date chosen to hold this celebration, February 6th, is closely associated with the
Iran Hostage Crisis, in which Islamic fundamentalists, acting under the orders of the
Iranian Government, stormed the U.S. Embassy in Tehran and took 52 American
Diplomats hostage, holding them for 444 days. This celebration is a blatant insult to
those Americans who suffered for 444 days during the Hostage Crisis and to the 241
Americans who died at the hands of the Islamic Republic in the 1983 bombing of an
American barrack in Lebanon. By associating Marriott with a government which
President Bush has repeatedly declared to be a “state sponsor of international
terrorism”, you are not only putting a black mark on the Bethesda North Marriott
Hotel, but also on Marriott International across America. Due to the great revulsion
that the majority of expatriate Iranians and patriotic Americans feel towards the
Islamic Republic, a boycott of the Marriott properties by these two groups will likely
ensue and a great deal of unpleasant publicity will undoubtedly result.
Furthermore, under President Clinton (Executive Order 12959), the Islamic Republic
has been declared “an extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign
policy and economy of the US”. Trade with the Islamic Republic or facilitation of
its activities within the borders of the United States is illegal under U.S. law. Allowing
this “celebration” to take place at the Marriott could very well violate these legal
parameters set in place to protect national security, and result in a number of
serious legal and financial ramifications for Marriott International.
Page 2
Since its inception, a primary goal of the Islamic Republic has been to destroy what it
terms “the Great Satan”, a crude reference to the United States. To this end, they
have used every means at their disposal including hostage taking, targeted
assassinations, bombings, and other blatant acts of terrorism. They are currently in
the process of developing nuclear weapons which, if completed, could pose a major
threat to American personnel and interests in the Persian Gulf region and beyond.
Given that providing a terrorist breeding ground in the United States is illegal,
facilitating a celebration on Marriott property for the purpose of rejoicing in their
terrorist victory borders on treason and certainly is a betrayal of those American
lives taken by Islamic Republic terrorist activities. Iranian Americans will not tolerate
the act of celebrating the Islamic victory against America, and we are prepared to
take any action necessary to stop this event and to facilitate and support Homeland
Security involvement in this matter.
Although you may have been previously unaware of the true consequences of
allowing this pageant of anti-Americanism to take place, you are now being given
clear notice of the true intent of the February 6th event organized by a terrorist
state sponsor, the Islamic Republic of Iran, at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel
and Conference Center.
We thank you for your time and hope that this issue is taken seriously by the Board
of Directors of Marriott Properties and its senior management staff, and that the
problem is properly addressed before any damage occurs to Marriott International’s
reputation.

DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ [Michael Ledeen]
http://www.nationalreview.com/thecorner/05_01_30_corner-archive.asp#054604
The Iraqi elections are, we can all hope, a lethal blow to the racism of the CIA and the State Dept arabists, all of whom have been saying for decades that democracy just can't work in "that part of the world," because "those people" just aren't capable of democracy. They accordingly saw their role as identifying "our thugs," and getting them into power. The big, brave turnout was an explicit and very dramatic confirmation of the president's view of the war between freedom and tyranny. The Iraqi people want freedom, and they are prepared to risk their lives for it, provided that they get support and half-way decent security.
I hope that the president and his aides draw the obvious lesson: that the other peoples of the region are similar, they are quite capable and fully prepared to govern themselves. If more than seventy per cent of Iraqis voted today, as it seems, imagine how many Iranians would vote. And Syrians, too. And Egytians, and Saudis, and the rest. Think revolution. Please?

Iraqis Brave Bombs to Vote in Their Millions
"We're free now" - "This is Democracy" - "We are happy"
Iraqi Bloggers tell the elections
Al Masry :
Election Day
Today we vote, today is a democracy birthday.
The people lines are very long, We heard explosions voice but we vote.
I'm very happy today, long live Iraq, long live love and long live democracy.
I will post more images here.
A suicide explosion in Al-Mansor city, Al-Sader city and in New Baghdad city near election center , but the Iraqis still insistent to vote.
We will crush the terrorists.
The democracy will win.
Also, read what the other bloggers have to say:
Basra:

Suleimanyia

Iraqis VOTE, for the first time , in a Free and Fair elections, the first in the Arab world.
Update: reports have it that the turnout is very big. This proves, once again, what I've been saying all this time I've been blogging: when given a real opportunity to vote in a Free and Fair election, the Arabs and the Muslims are able to choose and are willing to risk their lives in order to have their say. For the first time in the Arab world, the people are choosing their own future. Power to the People !
Report: Iraqi Election Turnout 72 Percent

The Desperation of the Terrorists
Tomorrow will be an historical day - For the first time, truly free elections will be held in the Arab worl - Iraq . All i can write here is that there will be a big turnout and I wish my Iraqi friends and the Iraqi people at large the best and GOOD Luck.
Update: BBC admits it has lied about Iraqi death stats
Cross Talk Radio interviews Aryo Pirouznia , Coordinator of the Iran Democracy group "Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy in Iran (SMCCDI)"
Iran is a nation of people ranging from Arabs to Turks to Persians. Aryo notes that many Iranians today are under 35. Because this demographic has access to high technology, these young people are often in contact with the free world and admit that if they could, they'd choose an American lifestyle. But the government still thinks that by repression, murder, stoning, public hangings and manipulation that they can maintain a climate of terror and fear and so retain power.
The Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy in Iran was created in 1996. By creating a mature generation of Iranians striving for democratic values such as individual freedom and free markets, the goal is to bring hope to Iran's future and to show guidance on the social and political scene.
As the world Media's attention is still focused on the "abuses" against Al Qaeda and Taliban terrorists in Guantanamo Bay, the Genocidal Arab Muslim regime of Sudan bombs Darfur, forcing thousands to flee
The Leftist "intellectuals" are the enemy, too.
An Italian "intellectual", an "anti-fascist" communist , has recently wrote, on one of the most famous Italian newspapers , that "It's wrong to label Zarqawi as a terrorist. He is fighting against the US occupation"
So, to this old man, Zarqawi ( him who killed Fabrizio Quattrocchi and the Italian soldiers in Nassiriyah ), is not a terrorist.. he's part of the "resistance" !!
Iraqi Bloggers wait for tomorrow's historic elections with happiness and optimism.

New anti-government graffiti in Florida, Camaguey (Cuba)
HAVANA, Cuba, January 25 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén, Lux Info Press / www.cubanet.org) - Someone wrote a number of anti-government slogans on public walls in the town of Florida, Camagüey province, in the early morning January 22. This is a repeat performance by the unknown graffiti artist.
A local human rights activist said: "This time, the slogans were painted on the wall of a funeral home, an emergency medical facility, a community center, and the El Cielo Floridano night spot. Police and State Security agents obliterated the slogans as quickly as they could."

The truth about the 60000000.com Petition- exposed by the Iranian Secularist Movement Marz-e-Por-Gohar
Some Iranians have exhibited a weak memory in regards to historical events that pertain to Iran. Today we are seeing yet again an attempt of neo-reformists to let Iranians forget about the folly of 8 years of “reforms from within” and accept their new experiment with a referendum.
We have absolutely nothing to discuss with the occupying power we call the Islamic Republic, and while some are ready to sit down and have dialogue with the theocracy, we remember that there exists a sea of blood between Iranians and the Islamic Republic. While many who advocate a referendum frequently state that a person’s background has no importance no matter what kind of treachery they have committed, so long as they advocate some kind of referendum, they should know that it is they who have washed their hands in blood, and we in fact view them as the enemies of Iran.
In order for us to achieve and preserve freedom, democracy and independence we must be ready and willing to pay the price it comes with. Independence from foreign powers is one point that the pro-referendum mob has kept a big distance from. The pro-referendum crowd already know that a referendum to overthrow the Islamic Republic is not possible; however, they want to reach a point where they can declare to the world that they tried to go about it non-violently. Once the pro-referendum mob is ready to concede that a referendum is not possible they will invite foreign governments to attack Iran and have power delivered to them, very similar to what happened in Iraq.
During this century many revolutions have triumphed with minimal costs to the people, but can the same be said of military foreign intervention. It is well known that some factions among the pro-referendum crowd would like Iranians to believe that a people’s revolution will bring unimaginable damage to Iranians, implying that foreign troops should invade Iran, as opposed to Iranians cleaning out their own house. At the same time, another faction among the referendum advocates would like to demonstrate the futility of a referendum, consequently bringing international powers into full acceptance of the present regime, including its hard-line factions.
Those that are engaged in the referendum campaign are either traitors, collaborators with the Islamic Republic, individuals with criminal histories, or at best, are naïve and power-hungry.
We reiterate that our objections to the referendum issue are not confined to their intentional oversight regarding the issue of religious dictatorship and secularism. Rather, our concern is that our country is already being occupied by a non Iranian power. There are monumental problems in front of us, much bigger then the amendment of the Islamic Republic’s constitution. Our flag’s Lion and Sun has been replaced with Arabic scriptures, our compatriots have been shot and imprisoned for defending Iran, and all the referendum crowd can do is advocate amending the constitution?
In the history of our precious Iran, history has shown that referendums in Iran have never benefited Iran and have in fact worked against its interests. The fake and illegal referendum that never actually took place in either Iran or Bahrian and whose architect is one of Iran’s greatest traitors, nevertheless made it possible for Bahrain to separate from Iran in 1970, just as the fake referendum that brought about the Islamic Republic has resulted in Iran being occupied for 25 years by tyrants who have always denied nationhood and national interest. What expectations can we have from the collaboration of the very same groups of people who were behind those past referendums who are today masterminding today’s referendum?
We have on numerous occasions reiterated the importance of various matters such as the defense of the Persian Gulf and we will not compromise on matters that deal with the preservation of Iranian territorial integrity, national honor (such our flag and the Persian Gulf) and issues of national deception.
We view this statement as a historical document demonstrating that we will always try our hardest to inform our fellow compatriots regarding the dead-end that is the referendum hoax.
We sincerely hope that the vigilance of the Iranian people will defeat this new scheme much sooner then the eight year charade of “reforms from within”.
Long Live Iran.

Protest Against the Genocide of Iran's Youth
SMCCDI (Urgent Action)
January 26, 2005
Dear Freedom Lovers, Dear Human Rights Activists,
The Islamic regime's judiciary has sentenced another young
Iranian, named Satar, to be executed in the next coming
days. Aged seventeen, he has officially been accused of
murdering a man in the rebellious City of Eslamshar which
is a poor suburb of Tehran.
Eslamshahr has been the scene of violent and bloody
governmental crackdowns on peaceful protesters who
exasperated by their conditions had preferred to raise
against the Islamic State. Satar's crime is beleived to
have been a legitimate act of self defense against bad
government.
The exact date of his execution has not been announced yet
but last week another young Iranian, named "Iman Farokhi",
was executed in Evin Political jail, located in north of
the Capital. His official crime was to have killed a
militiaman. In reality the militiaman was seen agressing
Farokhi's young girlfriend during a Friday mountain walk in
Tehran's mountains. Farokhi's execution followed the
backing off of the Islamic regime from executing five other
young Iranians due to unprecedented International pressure
created by an active campaign to save their lives.
Like many other victims of Islamic regime, Farokhi had the
bad luck to have stayed unknown till after his execution!
Please to intervene, by contacting your country's
officials, the UN and any NGO, in order to request for
their immediate intervention for putting a stop to this new
wave of massacre.

Guys,
the article above may not be perfect , but it gives us hope that President Bush may follow the advises of wise people such as Natan Sharansky.
Former dissidents like him - who was held as prisoner in a Stalinist Gulag in the former USSR - ( who have met heroes such as Andrei Sakharov ) know more than everyone else what the lack of Democracy means and how all the peoples of this earth feel when they lack the most important element who allows us to survive - that is Liberty and Freedom.
From wise men like the former political prisoner Sharansky , the President of the world superpower draws a lot of teachings and the speech that Bush has gave last week proves that he is now being advised by those who dare to speak of the spreading of Democracy everywhere, from Iran to China, from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan, from Belarus to Moldova, from Egypt, Yemen and even Lybia.
All this, opposed to the so-called "realists" at the State Dept , who will try to obstacle Bush in the implementation of his vision.
It's up to him to resist these people' s opposition and take the lead of the foreign policy in his hands.
By hearing yesterday's dissidents he is hearing the cries for freedom of today's millions of dissidents and political prisoners.
Bringing, advocating and Promoting democracy is the most important mission and it is worth the cost so far in Afghanistan and Iraq ( despite many opportunistic westerners have been in vain hoping that the Iraqis refused to vote ) and it will be worth whatever cost in future
Carissimi,

An historical opportunity for the Iraqis - Don't delay
Michael Ledeen Communicates with Iranians
SMCCDI (Information Service )
Jan 26, 2005, 01:30
Through the combined latest digital technology of the Internet and Satellite television, many in Iran and abroad discussed President Bush's inaugural speech and relationship building issues with Dr. Michael Ledeen on Sunday January 23, 2005. The organization, hosting and translation support was provided by the "Student Movement Coordination Committee for Democracy in Iran" (SMCCDI).
A prominent scholar and the Human Rights Chairperson of the Washington DC based "American Enterprise Institute" (AEI), Michael Ledeen communicated with Iranians around the World through PALTALK.COM and X-TV. The virtual meeting room was provided by PALTALK.COM and the worldwide live satellite broadcasting was made by X-TV which is a division of SOSIRAN.COM. Several hundred Iranians in Iran and abroad gathered to listen to Mr. Ledeen's comments and answers while thousands more followed the live program by watching their televisions.
Dr. Ledeen is the author of several books and a multitude of articles on Islamic tyranny and terror, and Iran's freedom movement. Many Iranians do believe of him as one of their main supporters and most of his articles, on Iran and the plight of Iranians, have been translated and distributed by underground networks.
Focusing on Iran-US relations and the Bush Administration's moral support of Iranian secularists seeking an end to the illegitimate rule of the Islamic regime the interactive discussions were very informative.
Simultaneous voice translation was made for any non-English speaking in the audience by SMCCDI's Coordinator Aryo B. Pirouznia who was also the moderator and was assisted by several colleagues. Several Iranians living in Iran defied the Islamic regime's intelligence services and monitors by participating in discussions with Dr. Ledeen, while others sent e-mails to be read during the session.
The program started at 22:00 (Iran local time = 01:30 PM US EST) with the broadcast of the "Ey Iran!" (Oh Iran!) the banned Iranian National Anthem. Interestingly, popular opposition interest in "Ey Iran!" has resulted in the Islamic regime's official media to start to play this song while avoiding any kind of national value. With President George W. Bush's 2nd Inaugural speech broadcasted for the audience as a backdrop a Persian translated version was initially read to the audience.
After being introduced, Dr. Ledeen proceeded to focus on America's promise of liberty and freedom for all mankind, and its' support of Iranians while praising the US President's "Freedom Speech." Emphasizing that the Bush Administration is determined to create conditions for a non-military regime change in Iran and that America will not let the Iranians down in their quest for putting an end to the Islamic rule of tyranny and terror. Specifically, he, Dr. Ledeen, added that the Bush Administration will back the Iranians when they collectively demand their freedom and democratic rights. Emphasizing that a real and well-planned internationally monitored referendum must take place in Iran, so as to avoid any chance that the current regime might subvert this popular aspiration. Expanding further, Dr.Ledeen stated, "all conditions must be met before a referendum wished by Iranians and accepted by them can take place in Iran."
Continuing, Dr. Ledeen said, "in the weeks ahead and as outlined in the President's great speech, Iranians will witness increased support and a firm policy against today's rulers of Iran. There are at this time propositions in discussion in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to generate a law for regime change in Iran by empowering its' people and opposition groups." he added.
An active verbal question and answer (Q&A) session with participants, who were chosen at random, took place until the end of the program which ended at midnight (Iranian time = 03:30 PM US EST). Questions, or comments received by E-mail and FAX were read to Dr. Ledeen with his responses being sent back by SMCCDI's members.
While the absolute majority of participants endorsed the Bush administration in its policy against the Islamic republic, several expressed concerns of a U.S. military attack, or invasion of Iran. Categorically rejecting that any type of U.S. military strike, or invasion of Iran will occur, Dr. Ledeen stated: "no such thing is on Washington's agenda." "No one in Washington would like to do so and, while such an option must stay on table, no one wants to do this. We do, however, believe that Iranians will be able to free Iran by themselves".
Other participants asked about rumors of a covert American effort to fragment the country as meaningless independentist groups have started to become active in recent months. This problem which helps the Islamic regime's propaganda machine is worrying many Iranians while such phenomenon is also existing in some European countries and even in the State of Texas. The American scholar responded with by saying: "The U.S. is not using such a tactic and we do not seek the splitting of Iran."
One participant asked about secret business deals between some U.S. companies, like Halliburton, and the Islamic regime. Ledeen responded by stating : "what has happened is against U.S. laws, it is disgusting and the people involved in this transaction must be put in jail, according to American law."
Several other questions were asked by participants about the possibility of American financial support of Iranian workers and opposition groups to increase the Iranian civil disobedience movement. Dr. Ledeen answered with " I've made the proposal to U.S. and European Worker Syndicates to help their Iranian colleagues. Purpose of the effort is to provide funding to workers so that they can provide for their families when they shut down the regime's industrial machine. As mentioned earlier, a senatorial resolution named "Santorum-Cornyn" has been introduced and a law should be voted for the financial support of opposition groups and media by the American Congress."
The Sunday's event has been the subject of many talks in Iran and among the Iranian Diaspora. It seems to have been able to contribute a little more to the increasing friendship of Iranians toward Americans and the build up of a bridge of trust toward the Bush Administration.

Here's a transcription of the incident:
Palestinian protesters: Allahu Ackbar! Allahu Ackbar! Allahu Ackbar!
Israel supporters: No violence! No violence. [Many people speaking at once.]
Jewish audience member: [Recites prayers in Hebrew.]
Protesters: Allahu Ackbar! Allahu Ackbar!
Jewish audience member: Adonai elohim! Adonai elohim! Adonai elohim! [Addressing the Palestinians] He loves you. Adonai loves you.
Angry Israel supporters: Murderers! Murderers! Murderers! Murderers! Murderers! Murderers!
Everyone: [Cacophonous arguing.]
Jewish audience member: [Addressing the Palestinians] Adonai loves you! Adonai loves you! [Unintelligible.] Abandon your hatred! Adonai loves you!
Angry Israel supporters: Murderers! Murderers! Murderers!
Palestinian protesters: [Unintelligible screaming.]
Everyone: [Cacophonous arguing.]
[The police and security guards separate the two sides.]
Thinking the crisis was over, the police eased off a bit for a moment and unwisely let the two groups come into contact again. Within seconds, the fists were flying. A teenage Palestinian boy (seen here on the upper right, with a kaffiyeh) attacked one of the Jewish audience members, but was quickly subdued by the police.

Iranians cheer massively Mr. Bush's Inaugural speech
Reports from across Iran are stating about the massive welcoming of President George W. Bush's inaugural speech and his promise of helping to bring down the last outposts of tyranny.
Millions of Iranians have been reported as having stayed home, on Thursday night which is their usual W.end and outgoing night, in order to see or hear the Presidential speech and the comments made by the Los Angeles based Iranian satellite TV and radio networks, such as, NITV or KRSI.
The speech and its package of hope have been, since late yesterday night and this morning, the main topics of most Iranians' conversations during their familial and friendly gatherings, in the collective taxis and buses, as well as, among groups of young Iranians who gather outside the cities on the Fridays.
Many were seen showing the " V " sign or their raised fists. Talks were focused on steps that need to be taken in order to use the first time ever favorable International condition.
Many Iranians, who were looking for the World's super power firm moral support and financial aid to credible secularist opposition groups, are know becoming sure that Mr. Bush's agenda is indeed to help them to gain Freedom, Secularity and Democracy. They do beleive correctly that such way will avoid an unecessary US invasion or military strike against Iranian facilities which will help the Mullahcracy to consolidate its illegitimate and unpopular power, while causing heavy financial damages and human casualities.
What had always been missing in order to create a wide scale Iranian democratic revolution, such as in Georgia, was till now a firm and noticeable World pressure on the Islamic regime and a trustable Opposition Council with a correct agenda.
Various reports from underground groups are stating that Iranians will be increasing the Civil Disobeidance Movement by making more strikes and demos in the days ahead.
Movement's Coordinator calls for seizing of "clearly oppened window of opportunity"
SMCCDI's Coordinator, Aryo B. Pirouznia, welcomed President George W. Bush's inaugural speech and called on Iranians to seize the unprecedented "clearly oppened window of opportunity".
Speaking yesterday afternoon to the Los Angles based "Radio Voice of Iran" (KRSI) anchor, the well respected Ms. Pari Saffari, he stated: "Never a foreign leader has took such noble and realistic position than President Bush who is understanding very well the plight of the repressed People of Iran and how the Democracy can benefit to all Mankind.".
In other part of this interview broadcasted worldwide, Pirouznia added: "Mr. Bush who's strong of the November 2nd Plebicit is clearly taking the side of Freedom and expressing his country's willingness to help bringing down the last outposts of tyranny including the Islamic republic regime. The Head of the US executive has stated that All who live in tyranny and hopelessness can know that the US will not ignore their oppression, or excuse their oppressors. The US President has firmly said that when we stand for our liberty, America will stand with us.... So more than ever and instead of continuing some infantile and sterile games, we must focus on a real political platform trusted by the majority of Iranians in order to help them increase their Civil Disobeidance actions and to create the conditions for bringing down the illegitimate and shaky theocracy..."
"...Unfortunately we have already lost crucial time, We should have been able to prepare a correct program during Mr. Bush's first mandat so we could have now better move on to free our country and respond to World's concerns by obtaining the necessary moral and needed financial support. Neverless better late than never if we do apply our gained experiences and don't loose the current opportunity.."
"...Rather than confusing the Iranians with some controversial proposition which are brought to us by questionnable individuals who are hoping to save part of their backwarded ideology, we must focus on a progressist, methodic and steady program known to Iranians which is the Civil Disobeidance allowing all of us to unite in order overthrow the regime and then to organize a real Referundum on the choice of the future Iranian secular and democratic regime.... We should in no shape sacrify the well proven need of putting an end to the totality of the Islamic regime and any variance of theocracy..."
"... The incompetent or Patriarchal parts of the Iranian opposition must open the way to those who have fresher ideas and are well knowing the real aspirations of Iranians who most of them are under the age of 40. It's only by this way that we can create an effective Internal wave that can profit of the unprecedented positive external conditions.."
Other interviews were made, yesterday, with some European and American radios, such as, with "Radio Europe Mideterraneo " and several stations affiliated to "Global American Broadcasting Network " during which Pirouznia praised Mr. Bush stands on War Against Terror and Support of Freedom.

President Bush, during his inaugural speech yesterday, has challenged the "realists" of the D.C. Foreign policy establishment, by advocating the spread of Liberty everywhere, against the status quo.

SMCCDI Note: Public executions are made in order to scear the population on what will the fate of whom ever will oppose the regime. Usually a professional crowd is brought by the regime to the scene of execution in order to give a popular aspect to the barbarian act made under very high security presence.
The Islamic regime labels often its armed opponents as Drug Trafficker, Rapist, Robber or Hooligan in order to help its European and Japanese partners to justify the continuation of their Economic relations with the Mullahcracy.

This is the first time that an American president has committed the United States to side with democratic reformers worldwide. The end of the cold war has allowed us such parameters, but the American people also should be aware of the hard and necessary decisions entailed in such idealism that go way beyond the easy rhetoric of calling for change in Cuba, Syria, or Iran-distancing ourselves from the Saudi Royal Family, pressuring the Mubarak dynasty to hold real elections, hoping that a Pakistan can liberalize without becoming a theocracy, and navigating with Putin in matters of the former Soviet republics, all the while pressuring nuclear China, swaggering with cash and confidence, to allow its citizens real liberty. I wholeheartedly endorse the president's historic stance, but also accept that we live in an Orwellian world, where, for example, the liberal-talking Europeans are reactionary-doing realists who trade with anyone who pays and appease anyone who has arms-confident in their culture's ability always to package that abject realpolitik in the highest utopian rhetoric. But nonetheless the president has formally declared that we at least will be on the right side of history and thus we have to let his critics sort of their own moral calculus.

And let me take a moment to praise Bill McGurn, the (new) chief speech writer. My bet is that this will be long remembered as an outstanding inaugural address, and I'm thrilled that Bill was part of it. Whaddaguy!
President Bush's Important Remarks for Second Term
![]()
Vice President Cheney, Mr. Chief Justice, President Carter, President Bush, President Clinton, reverend clergy, distinguished guests, fellow citizens:
On this day, prescribed by law and marked by ceremony, we celebrate the durable wisdom of our Constitution, and recall the deep commitments that unite our country. I am grateful for the honor of this hour, mindful of the consequential times in which we live, and determined to fulfill the oath that I have sworn and you have witnessed.
At this second gathering, our duties are defined not by the words I use, but by the history we have seen together. For a half century, America defended our own freedom by standing watch on distant borders. After the shipwreck of communism came years of relative quiet, years of repose, years of sabbatical - and then there came a day of fire.
We have seen our vulnerability - and we have seen its deepest source. For as long as whole regions of the world simmer in resentment and tyranny - prone to ideologies that feed hatred and excuse murder - violence will gather, and multiply in destructive power, and cross the most defended borders, and raise a mortal threat. There is only one force of history that can break the reign of hatred and resentment, and expose the pretensions of tyrants, and reward the hopes of the decent and tolerant, and that is the force of human freedom.
We are led, by events and common sense, to one conclusion: The survival of liberty in our land increasingly depends on the success of liberty in other lands. The best hope for peace in our world is the expansion of freedom in all the world.
America's vital interests and our deepest beliefs are now one. From the day of our Founding, we have proclaimed that every man and woman on this earth has rights, and dignity, and matchless value, because they bear the image of the Maker of Heaven and earth. Across the generations we have proclaimed the imperative of self-government, because no one is fit to be a master, and no one deserves to be a slave. Advancing these ideals is the mission that created our Nation. It is the honorable achievement of our fathers. Now it is the urgent requirement of our nation's security, and the calling of our time.
So it is the policy of the United States to seek and support the growth of democratic movements and institutions in every nation and culture, with the ultimate goal of ending tyranny in our world.
This is not primarily the task of arms, though we will defend ourselves and our friends by force of arms when necessary. Freedom, by its nature, must be chosen, and defended by citizens, and sustained by the rule of law and the protection of minorities. And when the soul of a nation finally speaks, the institutions that arise may reflect customs and traditions very different from our own. America will not impose our own style of government on the unwilling. Our goal instead is to help others find their own voice, attain their own freedom, and make their own way.
The great objective of ending tyranny is the concentrated work of gene
